Rohtang Pass to be thrown open for tourists today 21st May 2016 which was actually planned for 1 June 2016 by authorities earlier
The 13,050 feet high Rohtang Pass, the main tourist attraction, will be thrown open to tourists from tomorrow as the snow-clearance work has been completed.
A team of officials today visited Rohtang and found basic facilities, including parking and toilets, in place. The road has been opened only up to Marhi, about 35 km from Manali.
Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police Puneet Raghu said adequate parking space had been made available at Rohtang after clearing the snow. “The traffic police have been deployed at various places between Manali and Rohtang for smooth traffic movement. The vehicles having valid permits can now go right up to Rohtang from tomorrow,” he added.
Meanwhile, the tourism industry heaved a sigh of relief today. Unable to see the snow, the tourists would often return disappointed. Now, 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles will be permitted to go to Rohtang on a first come-first serve basis. Eco-friendly toilets have been set up.
While the NGT increased number of petrol vehicles from 600 to 800 going to Rohtang every day, it refused to raise the number of diesel vehicles.
The green tribunal also allowed tourism activities in the Rohtang Pass and permitted paragliding and snow scooters in limited number.
Currently, total of only 500 petrol and CNG vehicles are allowed to go up to Rohtang every day.
Earlier, the NGT had imposed a complete ban on commercial activities including paragliding, snow scooter ride and horse-riding at Rohtang Pass and its adjoining areas.

The Dandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, began on 12 March 1930 and was an important part of the Indian independence movement. It was a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly in colonial India, and triggered the wider Civil Disobedience Movement. This was the most significant organised challenge to British authority since the Non-cooperation movement of 1920–22, and directly followed the Purna Swaraj declaration of independence by the Indian National Congress on 26 January 1930.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi led the Dandi march from his base, Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad, to the coastal village of Dandi, located at a small town called Navsari, in the state of Gujarat. As he continued on this 24-day, 240-mile march to Dandi to produce salt without paying the tax, growing numbers of Indians joined him along the way. When Gandhi broke the salt laws at 6:30 am on 6 April 1930, it sparked large scale acts of civil disobedience against the British Raj salt laws by millions of Indians.
